Octopus Necklace

Necklace with a rock crystal octopus. It is reaching one tentacle upwards to grasp the necklace, which is a garland of seaweed carved from jasper. It is clutching an oval rubellite. There is a group of 3 small round diamonds at its throat area, and 4 small groups of 3 are nestled in between its tentacles.

This is another jewelry oddity I found while looking up tiaras. Isn't it just something else? The octopus, made of rock crystal, is hanging onto the seaweed necklace, which is carved from jasper. The octopus is also holding onto a treasure, in the form of a rubellite gem.

Sculptor Robert Lemoine created the necklace in 1970. I can find very little on the web about him. My searches are complicated by the fact that apparently there is more than one Robert Lemoine who was a jeweler/sculptor. Chaumet's official Instagram has a post about the necklace with some interesting background on its meaning:

It reflects a renewed interest, after 1968, in the iconic works of surrealist artists of the 1930s and symbolises the power of a passionate relationship verging on possessive attachment.

According to The Jewellry Editor, this piece is in the collection of Princess Camilla of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duchess of Castro. She also happens to own the Ruby Dragonfly Tiara, which made an appearance on the blog's first tiara post.
