Thunderstorms
I used to hate thunderstorms when I was a kid. I remember spending summers in Mississippi and hiding under the bedcovers when there was a thunderstorm. The deep rumbling of the thunder just scared me to death. It sounded like an avalanche of rocks was coming for me and there wasn't anywhere to hide away from it.
My mom tried to reassure me by giving me a very detailed, scientific explanation of how thunder was created but that didn't really help make it any better. Other kids I knew got cutesy stories from their parents about thunder, like one of my friends who was told that it was the angels bowling. I don't think even a story like that would have made me less scared!
I've been sitting on the couch while I type this out. It's almost 11:30 pm, and I've been listening to a thunderstorm for the better part of an hour now. It had been threatening rain all evening long, with lightening in the distance and some ferocious winds. Sometimes that's all that an Arizona summer storm ends up being but we've had some rain and now there are long, slow rolls of thunder that are occasionally deep enough to make the house rattle. I love it. Child-me would have been appalled. What changed? I don't know. Probably just that I grew up.
I'm going to get this posted and then head off to bed where I can watch the lightening flashes light up the room and feel the thunder rolling on by.
