Playing Ladies
This isn't going to be a long post, just a short reminisce about a childhood memory.
When I was young, probably in the 8-10 year old range, I loved to play ladies. This involved playing around with make-up or trying on jewelry. My lady companion was either my cousin or my granny and it was a different experience with each of them.
Granny and I played ladies by checking out her jewelry box and picking out lady names. Most of the pieces were just everyday pieces from the 60s and 70s. She did have a few pieces that were so special (meaning, probably expensive) that I wasn't allowed to wear them but could only look at them. That was ok, though, because it was fun even just looking at her treasures.
I say we picked lady names as if we chose different ones every time but we always used the same ones. I chose Gwendolyn because that was the prettiest, fanciest, most lady name I could ever think of. Granny chose Evelyn but I never knew if there was anything special about that name. We had a lot of fun (or, at least, I had a lot of fun!) referring to each other by our lady names and wearing jewelry.
My other lady companion was one of my cousins. She was about 10 years older than me and playing ladies with her involved makeup and hair! That was super fun. She had a whole case full of all kinds of makeup products and also wonderous instruments like an eyelash curler. That was so very exotic and grown-up to my younger self! My cousin would apply the makeup for me. I don't remember being prohibited from applying it myself but it was probably best that someone did it for me. Besides, it's kind of a nice feeling being worked on like that! I don't remember the hair as much as the makeup but there may have been hot curlers involved.
Do you have any childhood memories of special times like this? What was your version of playing ladies? Or are you now the adult and helping to create those childhood memories?
