- The Fog is Alive - did you think fog was just a mist? There are things (helpful things) living and growing in fog!
- The Dirt That Refused To Die - Soil releases carbon dioxide as part of microbial respiration. For an experiment, a biochemist needed lifeless soil so he tried to sterilize it with gamma rays. The soil wouldn't stop "breathing."
- Nuigurumi Jinja is a Shrine to Stuffed Animals - "This shrine is a place to bring your beloved stuffed toys or to express gratitude and honor the memory of bygone plush animals. It is also a Shinto religious site, so the activities are grounded in a sense of communion with the sacred nature of the forest."
For several years Best Son and I have been going to plays put on by one of the local community college theater departments. We must've seen about a half dozen and we've always enjoyed them. Last week they had their summer program put on Midsummer Night's Dream ... but 80s. It was really neat! They replaced some of the dialog with snippets of 80s songs and everyone was dressed 80s. Loved it - we had such a good time!
I received another batch of mail club goodies! I got a postcard and a bookmark from Ren-O-Graphics. I'll also show off the back of the envelope.
Blue Bike Art sent a postcard, 3 stickers and a chatty note. It didn't show up on the scan but the stickers have shiny silver holographic spots where the firefly and dismalites have glow spots and the background of the railroad worm is also shiny silver holographic.
Listening
Some podcasts I listened to this week:
- Hyperfixed - Whois(n't) - right now this is a premium episode which you can only get if you subscribe. It's kind of a followup from their Fauxbituaries episode. It's a really cool look at the history of Whois and why it went from showing domain owners to making everything private.
And I listened to several episodes of History and Coffee, the Tudor YouTube channel I follow. The episodes I listened to were:
- What if Tyndale's Bible Never Existed?
- The Black Tudors History Forgot
- The Emperor Who Dropped Mary Tudor for a Better Dowry (And Changed History Forever)
- Body for Body: The People Who Ran the Tower of London
- The Constable Who Accidentally Proved Anne Boleyn's Innocence
Reading
I finished Crisis on Doona this week and I am feeling very meh about it which is a bummer because, like I said, I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Decision at Doona. The main antagonist had no nuance - he was a caricature of a villain. It was very Snidely Whiplash. Also, the book involves a felinoid species who, when speaking English, pronounce Ts as Zs and double up on the Rs because alien felines and their lip situation. I can't prove it because it's not like I took notes but I really had the sense that these vocal tics were not consistent throughout the book.
I have the third book, Treaty Planet, and I've started it, mainly because I have nothing else lined up.
Watching
I finished up the final season of Grantchester. That was bittersweet because it was a favorite series but the final episode was nicely wrapped up and even though the series ended, it ended well.
I have started watching All Creatures Great and Small. I was holding off on watching it because one of my friends, many months ago, mentioned something about having a girls' night and binge watching the show. I caught up with her this week and she said she's pretty sure she's already watched this season so I'm in the clear to go ahead and watch them. So far I've just watched the first episode.
OK, that's about it for this week!
