- Programmer installed and ran Doom on an orbiting European Space Agency satellite - Have we found anything that DOOM can't run on?
- Space Exploration Logo Archive - Archive of logos related to space exploration. These come from both government and private agencies, organizations, the military, various missions, there's even a sci-fi section (Weyland Yutani is well-represented).
- How Archaeology is Reviving the Smell of History - Interview with Barbara Huber, an archaeochemist about the science of smell and how it helps us understand ancient cultures. She co-edited a book, Scents of Arabia: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Ancient Olfactory Worlds and, if that tweaks your interest, then you can download a free pdf here.
I'm at a standstill with 2 different cross stitch projects - on one I ran out of floss and need to order some more. The other one needs to be cut and sewn and I think the real thing that's stopping me there is the fear of messing up my laboriously stitched project! If I don't cut it I can't ruin it! I also can't finish it. Bah. In the meantime, I decided to stitch a quick little project just to get the dopamine hit of getting something done. The examples of this cute pattern, Happiness Potion from Daily Cross Stitch, were done in monochrome - either white floss on black fabric or black floss on white fabric. I had this cool mottled blue fabric left over from another project and then I decided to go wild and add some color. I really like how it came out! After I took the picture I decided to fill in the rest of the bottle stopper instead of leaving it as an outline and I really like the way it came out.
Next weekend I get to catsit my friend's diabetic kitty, Ceelo, again! He's such a sweet love once he gets settled and I'm looking forward to having a (temporary) cat buddy again.
I went to the movies this past week with Best Son. We saw Predator: Badlands and I thought it was a good, entertaining movie. I give it a 7/10. I'm not super familiar with the Predator franchise - the first one I saw was Prey which I thought was fantastic. Then I watched the original 80s Predator. And now this one. I think I'm good and don't really need to explore the others. If you're thinking of going to the theaters to watch this, there is no post credits scene so you can just go ahead and leave.
Listening
Some podcasts I've listened to this week:
- ArchaeoEd - How I Mapped Palenque, Part 7
- Letters From an American - Heather Cox Richardson - HCR is a professor of American history and she writes an almost daily letter that is a chronicle of the current political landscape. Quite often she relates what is happening today to something that has happened in the American past, sometimes she doesn't talk about current events but just writes about an important historical event. These are the same Letters she posts on Substack which, if you'd rather read them, are free. She doesn't keep them behind a paywall.
Reading
I finished the book I was reading last week, Solomon's Seal by Skyla Dawn Cameron. This was the first book in the Livi Talbot series which currently has 7 books in it. It was fun and I would definitely think about reading the other books once my TBR pile is somewhat tamed.
Once I was done with that I read T. Kingfisher's Snake-Eater which I would call a cozy horror? If you're at all familiar with Kingfisher, you'll know what I mean! It's set in an alternate near-future in the Southwest and involves gods, who aren't always reasonable. I stayed up most of one night reading that book. It was SO good!
Now I'm reading The Arrangement by Madeline Hunter which is a historical romance set in the 1300s. I've read about 2/3 of the book and it's keeping my interest. I thought the characters were being a bit too reasonable but I've just hit The Big Misunderstanding helped along by Lack of Communication so that's spiced it up a bit.
Watching
I have managed to make it through a whole week without watching any Crusade or Made in Abyss! The only actual show I've watched was my PBS Spanish/Portugese series, The Drought. I have 2 more episodes of that and it's getting really good!
I've been catching up on some YouTube channels that I enjoy but have been slacking on watching because they are hard to multitask to and if I can't multitask then I have a hard time concentrating on what's going on. Through Lucy's Lens is one of those. She lives (I believe) in Birmingham, England and visits all sorts of places like living museums, historical houses and buildings, sites of old industry like a ceramics-works. Her passion is social history and she talks about the people who lived there and what their lives were like. Super cool but often she'll stop narrating and just show you things and she'll caption it which is fine but if I'm multitasking then I'll miss that!
OK, I think that's about it for this week!
When I first started using Zonelets I had Disqus set up as a commenting system but it looked obnoxiously ugly and I ditched it.
