- Petronella Oortman's dollhouse - In the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th century several women had dollhouses built and furnished. These weren't toys but rather miniature works of art - these houses had running water, tiny books leather-bound books in the library, linens with the owner's monograms woven in and all sorts of other treasures. This is a fascinating look at one of the existing dollhouses of the time, that of Petronella Oortman, the wife of a silk merchant.
- Rave in the nave - I was tickled to discover there is a DJ priest out there throwing raves. Padre Lt. Col. DJ Guilherme (he's also a military chaplain) specializes in mixing techno and sacred music. He believes in a shared love of music bringing people together and feels that people at raves are more inclusive. There's a YouTube embed in the article from the concert he did in Rio de Janiero and I'm listening to it as I type out this blog post. Untz, untz, untz!
- Ambience Antarctica - Cool online music station featuring chill tunes and images from Antarctica from live webcams, live weather data and scenic videos.
I find it interesting how links make their way around the web. I have this mental image of the web being the ocean and the links getting caught in currents and hitting several different shores in their journey. Kind of like this!

This past week I found a link on MetaFilter that I posted to the 32-Bit Cafe Discourse. Someone replied they had posted that link on their own site earlier this year. I wonder where else that link will go on its journeys?
A few blog posts ago I talked about going to a pop up video arcade that a local dermatologist holds at infrequent intervals. He owns the building his practice was in and one half of it was for the dermatology office, the other half was for his large collection of classic arcade games. He has since retired and is in the process of selling the building so I thought that was going to be the last time going to his arcade. But! I just got an email alert tonight:
It's Thanksgiving week for Americans and I'll be having the family over for dinner. I'm going to take it easy again this year and buy the meal from one of the bougie grocery stores. I did that last year and it was really good! Best Son will be on hand to help me get everything prepped. One thing I will make is a sugar-free pumpkin cheesecake. One member of the family is diabetic and I always try to have something on hand he can eat. It's a really good cheesecake - even non-diabetic members of the family enjoy it. I've been thinking I should put the recipe in my recipes section.
Listening
Some podcasts I listened to this week:
- Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - Tiffany Haddish
- You're Dead to Me - Alexandre Dumas
- The Last Archive - Callings - "In the 1940s, a freelance wiretapper named Big Jim Vaus got mixed up with the cops, the mob, and the most famous evangelist in America. This week on The Last Archive: The ballad of Big Jim and what the intersections of telephone history and American spirituality reveal about how we understand the phone."
- Strong Songs - Stairway to Heaven - Hadn't come across this podcast before and this is an old episode but it's a really cool deconstruction of Stairway to Heaven that I, a nonmusical person, thoroughly enjoyed.
Also listened to one album from my stash in Foobar:
Reading
So in last week's blog post I said I had started on Terry Pratchett's Soul Music but I ended up setting that aside for now because it was just a little too much of what Pratchett is and instead of being charming it was annoying. I don't think it was the book, I think it was just me at that moment. I am almost finished with the book that replaced it in my reading list, The King's Man by Elizabeth Kingston which is a historical romance set in 14th century Wales and England. I will probably be finished with that tonight and next on the reading list will be Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher. I preordered that earlier this year and totally forgot about it until the bookstore called me on Friday to let me know it had come in.
Watching
I've watched a couple more episodes of Crusade and it's fine but still no B5. I read that JMS had a whole 5 year plan for this show like he did with B5 but the suits at TNT didn't go for it. I wish I could have seen what it would have developed into.
I had started a series on PBS a while ago, The Drought (Sequía), which is set on the Spanish-Portugese border. A drought has caused the water level in a reservoir to drop, revealing a crime that happened 30 years ago. I started watching that again and I'm enjoying it EXCEPT listening to Portugese drives me crazy. I love the sound of the Portugese language - it's so beautiful! But I speak (bad) Spanish and there are enough similarities beetween the 2 languages that my brain wants to understand it but doesn't, really. Have you ever had a dream and the people in your dream were speaking your language and you knew it but you still couldn't quite understand what was being said? Well, maybe that's just me but my brain gets twitchy listening to it!
I think that's about it for this week!
When I first started using Zonelets I had Disqus set up as a commenting system but it looked obnoxiously ugly and I ditched it. Some people are happy to not have blog interaction but I'd love to hear from you if you have any thoughts you want to share! You can respond through my guestbook or email.
