The toilet demons of last week have been vanquished. I had that problem fixed but also had some preventative work done so all in all it was more of a plumbing bill than I was expecting but hopefully I won't have any plumbing issues for a while. The joys of home ownership!

I've been going through old photographs and I'm amazed at how much I've been able to just throw away. I had two shoebox-sized boxes full of photos and now I only have about half a box full. I threw out duplicates, underexposed/overexposed/blurry/just plain bad photos, countless photos from things like zoo trips (seriously, I don't need photos of random tigers!). One of these days I'd like to get the photos better sorted and into some kind of album. For now, though, I still have tons more photos to go through. It's like a fairytale, where you have to sort the seeds by morning or the witch will eat you. And the seeds (photos) are never ending!

My hip has been feeling better these days and I'm able to get around without even a cane. I think it's a combination of weight loss and new meds (NSAID and muscle relaxer) that have helped. Now I'm in this cycle of having a really good day, overdoing it, resting up from that, having another really good day, doing more than I should, and so on. You'd think I'd learn but clearly I haven't.

Listening

Some podcasts I've listened to this past week:

I don't usually listen to music while working on the blog post but last week while I was doing that and updating the site I thought some tunes might be nice. John Mint - Business Logic is what I ended up listening to. Definitely going on the Good to Work To playlist (which includes Matthew S. Burns - Shenzhen I/O OST and Random Friday - Solar Fields).

Reading

I have finished Pangur Bán the White Cat by Fay Sampson. This was an enjoyable young adult book with definite Narnia similarities. This book was the first in a series. As much as I enjoyed this one, I think I'll be moving on to something else for now. I'm not quite sure what I'm in the mood for at the moment. While I figure that out, I've been catching up on back issues of Clarkesworld, a science fiction/fantasy magazine.

Watching

I've been watching season 14 of Call the Midwife. I love that show! It's sweet and sappy but sometimes that's what I need. It's available on my PBS station but for the American market the show has about 10 minutes cut out of it for commercials. So, I download the full episodes and watch those instead. Would I really miss those 10 minutes? Not in a larger sense but I think some of the deleted sections just give nuance to the plot.

I've also watched some really cool videos on Nebula this week. If these sound interesting but you don't have Nebula, both of these creators also post their videos to YouTube.

  • Stefan Milo - Europe's Undeciphered Prehistoric Tablets - Enigmatic Artefacts

  • Joe Scott - How World War 1 Created Plastic Surgery

  • I read a book last year, The Facemaker, which was all about what Joe talks about in his video. This was such a cool and interesting book. If you enjoy medical stuff and don't get too squeamish, I highly recommend it!

    Till next week!
