- Saving a Fish from Dying of Loneliness - I thought this was a really sweet story. The aquarium where this sunfish lives was closed for renovations, which meant the crowds of people the fish would usually see weren't there. He got depressed! Check out the video and story to see how the staff made a "crowd" for the fish to look at.
- Goodnight Moon stamps to be issued later this year - Are you familiar with the children's story Goodnight Moon? It's so lovely and gentle. The US postal service will be issuing stamps commemorating this book. So sweet!
- Goodnight Dune - I really like Goodnight Moon, the original, but this riff on it is awesome. Instead of:
In the great green room There was a telephone And a red balloon And a picture of The cow jumping over the moon
you getIn the great no room There was a floating baron And a view of two moons And a picture of — Shai-Hulud bursting out of the dune
Check out the link for the rest of the Duneified story! - Nokia Design Archive - This is a really neat site, definitely a rabbit hole you could get lost in. From the site's about page:
The Nokia Design Archive is a graphic and interactive portal designed by researchers from Aalto University in Finland. It currently hosts over 700 entries, curated from thousands of items donated by Microsoft Mobile Oy and representing over 20 years of Nokia’s design history — both seen and unseen. You can freely explore the archive, learn about designers’ experiences working in Nokia and discover interesting topics surrounding design and mobile technologies.
It's been a fairly quiet week. Had a couple appointments with doctors, went on a quest to find eggs and made an impulse buy.
Eggs are in somewhat short supply. The last 2 times I went grocery shopping both places I went to were out of them. I dug around on some local message groups and found out about a local-ish farm that holds a weekly market, selling all manner of fruits, vegetables AND EGGS! But you had to get there early because they sell out quickly. And it's way on the other end of the valley from where I live. So, I got up super early on Saturday and drove out to this farm. And I did indeed find my eggs! I got 2 dozen chicken eggs (at $7/dozen which is around what I pay for eggs at the natural grocers where I shop - I could get eggs cheaper someplace like Walmart but I do not shop at Walmart and also, I'm trying to be more conscious of where my food comes from) and a half dozen duck eggs for $5. Have you ever had duck eggs? They are larger and richer than chicken eggs. So delicious!
I got sucked in by a YouTube sponsor product. One of the YouTubers I watch is Paul Whitewick, who lives in England and searches out Roman roads. His videos are always so enjoyable to watch! Now apparently this book that was his sponsor product was all around the internet and Kickstarter last year but this is the first time I'd ever heard about it. It's called The Book: The Ultimate Guide to Rebuilding Civilization. That is definitely hyperbolic because if it was just you and the book post-end of civilization, you would not be rebuilding anything. However! It has super cool drawings that remind me of the drawings in Stephen Biesty's collection of Incredible Cross Sections books. The artwork in this book is absolutely beautiful. You can see some pictures at the link.
Listening
I haven't been listening to a whole lot of music or podcasts this week. I keep thinking I'll listen to music - see what YT Music has recommended for me this week and check out the latest on Bandcamp - or catch up with a podcast before bed but once I get comfortable in bed it is not long before I'm asleep! I should maybe rethink when and where I try to listen to stuff!
I do like me some K-pop but I've been kind of disappointed in what I've found lately. I did find this song though and while it's not very typical K-pop, I kind of like it! It's got a good groove. An Shinae - South to the West.
Reading
The reading situation isn't a whole lot changed from last week. I am still reading The Door into Shadow but I am almost finished with that. I've read a couple more chapters in Oathbreakers. Haven't started the book my son loaned me yet. I will give it a go once I finish The Door into Shadow, so probably in the next day or two.
Watching
I finished All Creatures Great and Small on PBS and while I enjoyed it greatly, I'm also kind of sad because there's no more until the next season drops.
I started watching the new Upstairs, Downstairs on Hulu. I quite enjoyed the bohemian mother-in-law who upends the house with her monkey and her meddling ways!
Nature on PBS had another excellent big cats episode, Landlords: Big Cats, Small World. Lions, cheetahs and leopards uneasily coexist and parent their cubs in Botswana. There was an absolute amazing cheetah mother featured who had a large litter of 5 and managed to keep them safe throughout their cubhood. Cheetah cubs have a crazy high mortality rate so that mother was just amazing for keeping them all alive.
Couple of cool videos I came across this week:
- GOPRO Inside a Watermelon - 128 days - When I was in grade school, we'd watch time-lapse videos in science class of things decomposing or plants growing. This reminded me of those videos.
- Why Crocodiles are Thriving in the Shadow of a Nuclear Plant - Crocodiles have found the perfect environment in the warm discharge waters of a Florida nuclear plant.
That's it, til next week!
