Maya's surgery to remove her mammary tumors was scheduled for today. However, a couple hours after dropping her off the vet called me and said that the pre-surgery x-ray showed the tumor had metastasized into her lungs. Maya's also been dealing with renal failure and her numbers have gotten worse since the last time we did blood work. Between that and her prior bad experience with anesthesia (during a dental her blood pressure and oxygen dropped so low they ended the procedure early) we decided to not do the surgery. There wouldn't have been any real benefit and but a whole lot of risks.

So what now? Well, Maya is still acting like a cat, doing cat things and the tumors don't seem to be causing her any pain at the moment. The vet prescribed pain meds for me to keep on hand if/when she starts hurting. It's hard to say how long she'll be with us and I'm not even sure what might happen first. Her kidneys could fail, the lung mets could cause breathing issues, the tumors could grow larger, ulcerate and become painful. I asked the vet what kid of timeline she thought we were looking at and she guessed 3-4 months. For now I am going to keep an eye on her and spoil the hell out of her until it's time to say goodbye.
